As part of the Odyssée residency programme, Alena Olasiuk, a Ukrainian visual artist, was hosted at the Royal Saltworks between the 13th January and th 3rd of February 2025.
"My residency at Saline Royale was an essential space of reflection—between past and future, between places and ideas. The quietness, the absence of excessive communication, and the vast, beautiful landscapes gave me the opportunity to think deeply and reexamine my practice. Walking became an integral part of my process, creating the mental space necessary for transition—something crucial when preparing to step into a new phase.
For 11 years, I have been immersed in the creation of lines using Chinese ink, exploring the balance between simplicity and complexity. My lines function as a diary, capturing both my internal state and the influence of my surroundings. Coming from China and Ukraine, and now settling in France due to the impact of war, I wanted to investigate how this shift in geography and context would shape my artistic expression. The residency provided the ideal setting to engage with these questions, offering both solitude and inspiration through its historical atmosphere.
During my time at Saline Royale, I created a series of eight works, each marking a new period in my practice. My lines, always evolving, took on a bolder aesthetic—perhaps a reflection of my changing relationship with my work and the world around me. In addition to producing new artwork, I also spent time writing, using text as another way to process my ideas and document my reflections. While the writing was personal and exploratory rather than structured, it played an important role in shaping my thoughts on my practice.
The residency reinforced the importance of stillness and space in the creative process. It gave me the time to not only make new work but also to reassess my artistic direction, offering clarity as I move toward the next chapter of my practice."
